This special exhibition will fully explore the African Burial Ground, from its unearthing in 1991 to the 2006 Presidential declaration making it America's first National Monument commemorating a community of enslaved African men, women, and children. From the local community's struggle to 'stop the digging' and to properly protect and preserve the ancestral cemetery.
