Colonial art in Mexico represents, in large measure, European artistic movements of the period -- renaissance, baroque, rococo and neoclassic -- with variations, and symbolizes the historic fusion of many different cultures. Often religious, Mexico's colonial art manifested the syncretic combination of pre-conquest indigenous imagery and ceremony with Spanish Catholicism. The museum's collection is comprised of religious paintings including works on tin (ex-votos, retablos), antique textiles, religious statues and richly carved furnishings.
