Gary W. Gallagher, a leading historian of the American Civil War, will speak on command relationships during the Civil War Nov. 4, 4:30 p.m., as part of the Marshall Center Lecture Series. A reception will follow.

Gallagher is the author and editor of more than 30 books including “The Union War,” “The Confederate War” and “Lee and His General in War and Memory.” He has received numerous awards for his work, including the Laney Prize for best book on the Civil War, and the Douglas Southall Freeman History Award for best work in Southern history and the Fletcher Pratt Award for best nonfiction book on the Civil War.

Gallagher is the John L. Nau III Professor in the History of the American Civil War at the University of Virginia and founder of the Association for the Preservation of Civil War Sites, today known as the Civil War Trust.
