With his beret, his eye-patch and his mock-British accent, Slick Rick was unique. Not only did he have beats from the Bomb Squad (the production team behind Public Enemy’s greatest hits), but he was a master storyteller and peerless rhymer, able to bring all sorts of surreal characters to life in his songs. Though ongoing scrapes with the law prevented him from capitalizing on his initial success, Slick Rick is still one of the most distinctive voices in the realm of hip-hop, is still name-checked by young artists (most recently British soul up-and-comer Amy Winehouse) and still making great music.
