The Oshawa Public Library and The Robert McLaughlin Gallery are delighted to announce their second annual joint event.

This year's event features Christopher Hume, architecture critic and urban affairs columnist of The Toronto Star, who will lead a panel discussion on the future of the cityscape and architecture of cities like Oshawa. Local architect, David Mills and local city councillor, Louise Parkes will respond to Christopher Hume's keynote presentation.

Speaker Biographies

Christopher Hume
Christopher Hume is the architecture critic and urban issues columnist of the Toronto Star. Since he started writing for the paper in 1981, Hume has been nominated for four National Newspaper Awards (critical writing category) and has received a certificate of appreciation from the Ontario Association of Architects. His book, William James' Toronto Views, won a Toronto Heritage Award in 2000. In 2004, he received a Landscape Ontario award. Hume appears frequently on radio and television as a commentator on city issues. Hume was also named Toronto's best newspaper columnist by NOW magazine in 2005 and Eye magazine in 2006. He was educated at the University of Toronto and Glendon College. Known as a champion of cities and the arts, Hume lives in downtown Toronto with his wife and two daughters.

David A. G. Mills, B.Arch., O.A.A., MRAIC
Since 1977, Mills & Associates, an Oshawa architecture and design firm, has been known for well-designed architecture in the Durham Region and Southern Ontario. Mills & Associates has designed a wide range of public facilities and the firm has been involved in several winning design competition projects. David Mills graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Environmental Studies in 1973 and a Bachelor of Architecture in 1975. David is a member of the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) and served as Vice President for three years. He is active in a number of Oshawa community organisations, including Rotary Club of Oshawa, a past director of Camp Sumac Boy Scouts Camp and a past chairman of Durham Energy Conservation Society.

Councillor Louise Parkes
Louise Parkes is a City Councillor for Oshawa and President and CEO of Parmac Relationship Marketing Ltd., a professional Call Centre she founded in 1992. Louise was first elected to Council in 2000 and she was re-elected in 2003. Louise served as Deputy Mayor for a year and is currently Chair of Development Services Committee and a member of the Budget and Audit Committee. She is also a member of the Places To Grow and Community Strategic Plan Steering Committees. She is active in a number of community organizations, including Rotary Club of Oshawa, Downtown Action Committee, and Festival of Murals. Louise is married to Darryl Sherman, a lawyer and a local business owner and they live in Oshawa.
