CILIP in London: Legible London: A Wayfinding System for London January 12, 2010

The Mayor wants everyone to walk more. But how do you get information on the easiest or quickest routes for navigating your way across London? Many visitors use the Tube map! Is that really the answer?

Legible London was proposed in 2004 to tackle the problems faced by the capital's pedestrians. It assumes that if users are presented with accurate, timely and reliable wayfinding information, walking will become a viable alternative for journeys currently made by other transport modes. Research suggests that walking can be quicker than using the underground, as well as providing health and environmental benefits. It can also stimulate the local economy and give extra chances to use services such as libraries. In 2007 a prototype multi-modal wayfinding system was commissioned for a limited area of the West End and evaluated the following year.
Tim will discuss the background to the research (including some of the bizarre routes people take unaided), showing how the idea has been tested and where it can take us.
Tim Fendley founded the Applied Information Group to push the boundaries of information
design. He has a passion for cities and mapping and a methodology that encompasses diagnostic testing in real situations mixed with product design prototyping techniques. His current fixation is to make sense of London. He is leading the system design for Legible London. When completed it will be the most extensive information service of its kind in the world.

This talk will be of particular value to anyone registered for CILIP Chartership and can contribute towards CPD requirements.
