Children in Combat

In 2006, the United Nations estimated that more than 250,000 children were actively involved in armed conflict. Worldwide, children as young as nine have been used as soldiers, spies and messengers. Although many children serve voluntarily, abductions are commonplace. Often, children enter conflict for lack of any viable alternative. The consequences of this reality reverberate across time and space: short term violence continues while a generation's future dwindles.

Garnering increasing international attention, the use of children in combat has recently been confronted by the United States Congress, the United Nations and the International Criminal Court. Recognizing the severity of the problem, scholars, politicians and activists have taken steps towards its resolution, but progress remains limited.

What is the current situation? What is life like for children participating in armed conflict? Which policies will best address the issue? How have citizens around the country engaged the problem?

On March 14th at 7:00 PM in Cubberley Auditorium, experts and activists will speak to these questions. Jo Becker of Human Rights Watch and Carol Bellamy, former Executive Director of UNICEF, will relate their experience mobilizing governments against the use of child soldiers. Jason Russell and Laren Poole, two filmmakers of the documentary Invisible Children, will talk about their experience as activists. Prior to the event, a screening of Invisible Children, a film exposing the lives of children in Uganda, will be held on March 11th at 7:00 PM in Room 40 of Building 420.
