Vizcaya's creator, James Deering, was an early environmentalist and in 1914 he made the then-unusual decision to locate Vizcaya's Main House directly on Biscayne Bay, taking advantage of the view and preserving the rockland hammock (native forest). Today, because of Deering's foresight, Vizcaya is home to many large and old trees, including several registered state and national champions. Join Chief Horticulturist, Ian Simpkins, for a tour of the notable and champion trees on Vizcaya's grounds. Learn about how a tree becomes a champion as well as Vizcaya's historic tree preservation efforts.
