A romantic comedy about an American woman in Ireland is at the heart of the 1997 R-rated film, "The Matchmaker," to be presented at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 3 in the Williamsburg Library Theatre, 515 Scotland Street. The program is free of charge and reservations are not needed. William and Mary Professor Emeritus of English, Jack Willis, will introduce the film. Marcy (Janeane Garofalo) is an assistant to a U.S. Senator who is having problems with a re-election campaign. Desperate for Irish votes, the Senator's chief of staff (Denis Leary) sends Marcy to Ireland to trace his relatives or ancestors. Marcy arrives at the village of Ballinagra as it prepares for an annual Matchmaking Festival. A well-dressed, handsome and single young lady, she becomes the center of attention for two professional matchmakers, Dermot and Millie, as well as for bartender Sean.

The Library presents the Celtic Film Series in cooperation with the local chapters of the St. Andrew Benevolent Association and the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. The series explores the history, drama and quirky humor of films made in or about Scotland and Ireland.
