A multi-layered Irish tale set in 1936 Donegal is the setting for "Dancing at Lughnasa" (pronounced LOO-nah-sah), a 1998 movie presented at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 6 in the Williamsburg Library Theatre, 515 Scotland Street. The program is free of charge and reservations are not needed. William and Mary Professor Emeritus of English, Jack Willis, will introduce the film.
Based on the Tony-award winning stage play by Brian Friel, this film is set in the small rural village of Ballybog, Ireland. It tells the story of five unmarried sisters who discover their missionary brother (Michael Gambon), recently returned from Africa, is no longer the stoic man they once knew. Cavorting with African tribesmen has unleashed a wild spirit that threatens his place in the community as well as the family's. The film also stars Meryl Streep and Gerard McSorley.
The Library presents the Celtic Film Series in cooperation with the local chapters of the St. Andrew's Society and the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. The series explores the history, drama and quirky humor of films made in or about Scotland and Ireland.
