Cecilia Beaux presents a retrospective of one of the leading female artists working in the United States in the nineteenth century. Her forty-year career represents a compelling and underexamined chapter in the history of American art. In an effort to fully understand Beaux's artistic independence, ambition and appeal, this retrospective will situate her better known portrait commissions in the broader context of early commercial, student and French productions as well as later landscape and still-life compositions. The exhibition seeks to uncover a richer dimension to her work by exploring questions of gender, class and the importance of place.
