Near West Theatre will take a ninth-life leap with an all-teen reinvention of this compelling fable of hope and redemption. This musical setting of T.S Eliot’s whimsical collection of poetry first took London’s West End and Broadway by storm in the early 1980’s and has since gone on to become a worldwide phenomenon. The song “Memory” is one of most popular and often recorded theater songs of all time. The characters are larger-than-life felines inhabiting a metaphorical junkyard where one of them will be chosen for rebirth. Among the candidates are the aging theatre cat, Gus; the criminal Macavity; rocker Rum Tum Tugger; and the once-glamorous Grizabella, now but a faded memory of her former self. Cats transports its audience into a fantastical world that could only exist in the theater, making it one of the most dazzlingly theatrical musicals ever created.
