Cathedral Of St. John The Divine Celebrates Katherine Anne Porter With Induction Into The American Poets Corner November 5, 2012

The Cathedral of St. John the Divine will celebrate short story writer, novelist, journalist, essayist, and political activist Katherine Anne Porter (1890-1980) on the occasion of her induction into its American Poets Corner on Monday, November 5 at 7:30 PM at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, located at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street), Manhattan.

The celebration of Katherine Anne Porter and her literary gifts will include readings of her work, reminiscences, music, and tales from her storied life. Poets William Jay Smith and Rosanna Warren, along with the Cathedral’s Poet in Residence, Marilyn Nelson, The Reverend Canon Thomas Miller, Canon for Liturgy & the Arts, and Professor Darlene Unrue, president of the Katherine Anne Porter Society, will honor this latest inductee to the Cathedral's highest literary honor.

Porter’s formal induction will take place during the Cathedral’s regularly scheduled Evensong service on Sunday, November 4 at 4:00 PM. The induction will include music from the Katherine Anne Porter songbook and the installation of her plaque into The American Poets Corner.

Born in Texas, Porter was best known for her short stories, essays, and the bestselling novel Ship of Fools (1962). In 1966, she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for The Collected Stories of Katherine Anne Porter. Her penetrating insight into the darker side of the human mind, coupled with her passion for freedom and refusal to bend to the societal expectations of female writers, gained her notoriety during her lifetime. Porter’s clear-cut prose and refinement of the "short novel" earned her a place in literary history.

The American Poets Corner was created in 1984 to memorialize and celebrate American writers. Previous inductees include Emily Dickinson, E.E. Cummings and last year’s honoree, James Baldwin. The Poets Corner and Cathedral poetry events have become an integral part of the literary landscape of New York. Visitors come to the Poets Corner to remember the authors they’ve long loved and to discover others, whose works they may not have read.
