Canada has the second largest oil reserve in the world. Canadian oil sands have an enormous resource potential and much of its production is pipelined into the Chicago area. Amid concerns about sustainability and environmental impact of production methods, how secure are the oil sands as a reliable source of energy?

Join us for an informative presentation and discussion by Dr. Eric Newell on this topic.

His discussion will include:

§ The enormous resource potential, forecasted growth and how this links into key US-Canada energy security issues

§ The policy, regulatory system and commitments that shape how this resource is developed as well as the impact on the USA

§ The socio-economic benefits in Canada and the US arising from its responsible development, including examples of investment opportunities and the impact on suppliers and US consumers

§ The importance of Chicago/Midwest and positioning to capitalize on the opportunities

§ The environmental myths and realities, plus progressive steps the industry and province of Alberta are taking to support world class development

Dr. Eric Newell has been a key player in the Canadian oil industry for the past four decades. He is the retired Chancellor of the University of Alberta and served as President, CEO and Chairman of Syncrude Canada Ltd. Under Dr. Newell's leadership Syncrude, which is the world's largest producer of crude oil from oil sand, became an increasingly significant source of energy for North America. Prior to joining Syncrude, he worked for Imperial Oil Limited and ESSO Petroleum Canada Ltd. Dr. Newell currently chairs the Climate Change and Emissions Management Corporation as well as chairing Alberta Innovate: Energy and Environmental Solutions.

Dr. Newell holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of British Columbia and a Masters of Science in Management Studies from the University of Birmingham, England. He also holds Honorary Doctorates of Law and an Honorary Diploma.

As president of the Alberta Chamber of Resources in the mid 1990s, Dr. Newell spearheaded the creation of the National Oil Sands Task Force, which in 1995 developed a comprehensive new energy vision for Canada. This vision led to the large scale expansion now underway in the oil sands industry. Today he pushes new technology applications to improve environmental and sustainability advances in the oil sands. He recognizes that climate change challenges facing both the US and Canada can help initiate harmonized solutions for evolving better energy supply security between our countries.
