In 1952, the Department of Indian Affairs forcibly relocated the Cheslatta-Carrier First Nation from its traditional territory for a massive hydroelectric-reservoir project. The Cheslatta lived in a refugee camp before receiving new reservation land from the Canadian government and the community came close to destruction. In the 1980s, a regional political coalition started the community’s return from near-annihilation. This presentation will tell the story of the Cheslatta journey and their remarkable achievements.
