Teenage backyard wrestlers, Halloween spook houses, annual eating contests, and mythical beasts are just some of the subjects that inform the work of Cameron Jamie. Suspended in between vernacular traditions and common folk anthropology, Jamie's work draws inspiration from various underground and fringe rituals of American suburban culture, particularly in California's San Fernando Valley, the suburb where the artist grew up. The resulting work--a blend of film, video, performance, photography, sculpture, and drawing--collides voyeurism with autobiography in favor of an analysis of our contemporary life, our fascination with the outlandish, and our need for escapism.
