Cameo recorded a funk classic when it released 'Word Up' in 1986. Filled with heavy synths and basslines, the album defined the sound of the mid-1980s. 'Word Up' broke Cameo into the mainstream, reaching the Top Ten on the pop charts. Another of Minneapolis' best performers, Morris Day & The Time hit the mainstream in the mid-'80s with the Prince-produced singles 'Get It Up,' 'Cool' and '777-9311.'
