CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS:
ROOT DIVISION: GALLERY 3175

“The Greek Play”
Exhibition Dates: January 11 - 27, 2007
Opening reception: Saturday, January 13, 7 pm
** Deadline for Submissions November 1st, 2006 **

Focusing on the idea of gallery and theatre as kinetic, living environments, this show invites local and national artists to submit work relating to mythology. Joseph Campell once wrote, “Man, apparently, cannot maintain himself in the universe without belief in some arrangement of the general inheritance of myth.” Whether a work derived from the ancients, or composed with a more esoteric system of meanings, this show will emphasize artist’s ability to map and respond to the creative and destructive sides of world making.

In conjunction with the exhibition, elastic future Theatre Company will be presenting a new adaptation of Ancient Greek tragedy. A synopsis of “The Greek Play” is noted below:
“In ancient Greece, the gods rape whomever they please, the mortals die without a thought, and the nymphs sleep with whatever they can get their hands on. After Clytemnestra murders her husband (along with half of Athens), her daughter Cassandra and a wood nymph named Dromeia hunt her to the end of the Earth. elastic future brings you the horror, joy and ritual of a new kind of play. THE GREEK PLAY is experimental art, theatre party, and gallery show.“

Submission Guidelines:
Two and three-dimensional work (including installation and costume) is encouraged. We ask that 2D work be no larger than 5’x6’. Because of the nature of this integrated show/performance we cannot take video submissions or sound installation.
