A peace and justice extravaganza, with a line-up that includes a performance by a former member of Sweet Honey in the Rock, Evelyn Harris, is expected to draw participants of all ages to Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus on Sunday, October 22.

The Fourth Annual Brooklyn Peace Fair is sponsored by Brooklyn Parents for Peace, and co-sponsored and hosted by Long Island University. Invited guests include Transit Workers Union President Roger Toussaint, author and poet Sonia Sanchez, and rapper Talib Kweli, among others.

Free and open to the public, the fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on October 22 on the Brooklyn Campus, located at the corner of Flatbush and DeKalb avenues in downtown Brooklyn.

Nearly 200 local community groups, performers, activists and elected officials are expected at the event, which will offer workshops on peace issues such as in the Middle East and Darfur as well as about inner peace and nonviolent communication. A Youth Peace Contest will encourage youngsters in grades three through 12 to create original writing, art or rap about peace. The art will be on display and the young rappers will compete live at the Fair, with winners selected by renowned rapper M-1 of Dead Prez and others.

The goal of the Fair, according to organizers, is to encourage New Yorkers to take action to promote peace and to unite diverse communities across Brooklyn, creating bridges for communication, participation and understanding.
