Manfred Honeck, conductor; Nancy Goeres, bassoon. Webern: Six Pieces for Orchestra; Fletcher: Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra (PSO Commission); Bartók: Suite from The Miraculous Mandarin; Ravel: La Valse. Webern wrote Six Pieces while coping with the death of his mother. Each movement deals with a different stage of his loss. PSO Principal Bassoon Nancy Goeres premieres Fletcher’s Bassoon Concerto. Bartók’s Miraculous Mandarin is exciting and colorful music from the ballet of the same name. Composer Benjamin Britten said of Ravel’s La Valse, “its one-movement design plots the birth, decay and destruction of the musical genre: the waltz.”
