Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 1
Leonard Slatkin, conductor; Olga Kern, piano. Tower: For the Uncommon Woman; Tower: Made in America; Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 1; Dvořák: Symphony No. 6. Joan Tower composed the fanfare, For the Uncommon Woman, to honor adventurous women and Made in America as a commission for 65 U.S. orchestras in all 50 states. Winner of the Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition, Olga Kern debuts in Rachmaninoff’s seldom-heard First Piano Concerto. Although composed in the Viennese symphonic tradition, Dvořák’s Sixth Symphony unmistakably portrays his Czech heritage.
