Big Stories Little India highlights the experiences and histories of the diverse and vibrant South Asian communities coexisting in the Gerrard Street East neighborhood. In the summer of 2007, SAVAC and [murmur] commissioned a group of artists to engage with the Gerrard Street East communities. Artists Avantika Bawa, Brendan Fernandes, Zaheed Mawan, Amin Rehman, Ambereen Siddiqui and Rashmi Varma made audio recordings and site-specific artworks based on the stories they gathered from the local shop owners, residents and visitors. These works where met with much acclaim both from the local media and from the Gerrard Street East communities. SAVAC and [murmur] also held a series of workshops in the neighborhood in venues such as the Riverdale Immigrant Women's Centre and the Ashdale Library with a wide cross-section of the communities.
The Big Stories Little India website will bring together the various components of this significant project. It will be an online, accessible archive that showcases under-represented and important stories. Big Stories Little India provides a creative behind the scenes look at one of Toronto’s most flourishing neighborhoods.
