Hokan Miller is a boat and barge dispatcher at Upper River Services, a harbor service in Saint Paul. He holds a Coast Guard license to operate towboats on western rivers and still pilots occasionally. He knows the Mississippi River in the Twin Cities as well as anyone alive and is a founding member of the Friends of the Mississippi River Board of Directors. The FMR works to protect the river through a program of land conservation, watershed protection and building community stewardship of the riverfront. This event is sponsored by the Insittue for Advanced Study, the College of Design, the Institute on the Environment, the Telling River Stories collaborative, the Department of Urban Studies, the Water Resources Center and the Metropolitan Studies Consortium as part of the series Telling River Stories: The I-35W Bridge, the Mississippi River, and Rebuilding Community Connections.
