Benjamin Bertocci
Stutter
December 8 through 30, 2010
Opening Reception: Wednesday, December 8, 7-10pm

“Our own somewhat self destructive and more base natural behavior, which in the past helped us to dominate the food chain, have since become a sort of evolutionary baggage in our current environment. A simple example would be the way sugar is desirable to us because we need fruit, but this natural instinct can hijack our reason and lead to self-destructive behaviors”

Benjamin Bertocci’s layered collages feature corporeal and inanimate imagery suspended in a void of apprehension. The resulting image is an allegorical stutter – where the subjects are metaphorically hindered from progression by their own shortcomings; as represented by the inability for the subjects to be viewed in their totality. These collages are composed of digital prints on canvas, paper, or aluminum, with both realistic and more expressionistic use of oil paint, determined to either enhance or interrupt.

Benjamin Bertocci was raised in Stockbridge Massachusetts. He received his Associates Degree from Simon’s Rock College, his B.F.A in printmaking from the University of Massachusetts, and his M.F.A. from Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville where he was later employed for a year as Visiting Assistant Professor in Printmaking. Currently he lives in Brooklyn, and works as assistant manager of the painting area at Jeff Koons studios.
