Beginner Darbuka technique with Mark

12:30PM to 1:30PM
Mark will teach basic darbuka-striking technique and six rhythms common to Middle Eastern music. He will cover how to hold the darbuka, proper posture and technique, as well as how to make the three main darbuka sounds--the "DUM", the "TEK" and the "KA".

Both drummers and dancers will benefit from this class. The drummer will learn to keep a basic rhythm for a bellydancer and for Middle Eastern drum circles. The dancer will learn to recognize basic rhythms common to Middle Eastern bellydance songs and will learn to anticipate beats, tempo and rhythm changes necessary to improvise to live music.

Middle Eastern Music For ALL Instruments Taught by Melissa

1:30PM to 3PM

Melissas workshop is perfect for musicians and percussionists ready to try something different! She will teach the basic structure of several popular Middle Eastern bellydance songs in an ensemble format. Percussionists can learn how specific rhythms fit particular songs and how to change seamlessly between rhythms. Melody musicians can learn popular Middle Eastern melodies and will be given instruction on basic makam theory.

The goal for this workshop is to enable all percussionists and melody musicians to play common songs together. All instruments are welcome, as this music can be played on ANY instrument.

Sheet music, rhythm notation, and sound files can be downloaded in advance at www.dorku.com. Sheet music will be available for sale or to borrow at the workshop.
