The Peralta House exhibits, "Becoming California, Becoming America," will open to the public on May 9, 2009 from 12 noon to 6pm at 2465 34th Ave in the Fruitvale District of Oakland.

You are invited!

You will be one of the first to see the house filled with the history of the Peralta family and the Native People, and stories of the community today; foods, memories, dramas and dreams, transforming the East Bay from the land of the Ohlone, to the Peralta cattle ranch, to farms and orchards, to the thriving megalopolis it is today.

The event will also feature outdoor cooking demonstrations from 12-3: making and baking-and eating!-of Mexican pastries and hand-made tortillas with master chefs, free of charge.

We have a whole room devoted to Your Story, with the Peralta and Native family trees, genealogical information for visitors to take home to find their own family histories. Also giving opportunities for visitors to contribute their stories in a StoryCorps-like interview station.

The event will also feature outdoor cooking demonstrations from 12-3: making and baking-and eating!-of Mexican pastries and hand-made tortillas with master chefs, free of charge.

As you wait for your tour to begin, or linger afterwards, you will also have the chance to learn Native American and Mexican dancing that might have been danced here in the 1800s, and the basics of salsa, samba and hip-hop, danced here and now by the whole community.

Come and enjoy food, crafts and games, dancing, and most of all, an untold history of Oakland the stories....
