Become a Storyteller: Peralta House Docent Training June 5, 2010

June 5th and 19th, 9am-3:30pm

Join professional trainers and volunteers from all over the East Bay for special training series, on June 5th and 19th. Learn how you can make a big difference, with a small time commitment, leading tours at the Birthplace of Oakland.

After an eye-opening crash course in the art of storytelling and the history of California, you will be encouraged to explore a particular strand: the Native Ohlone people who managed crops and animals in the East Bay, the Peralta family who colonized it, or the community of intersecting cultures and ideas which it has become in recent times. Docents compose unique tours - including topics that interest them, favorite audio selections, and their own family histories.

After three training sessions, docents lead one tour per month (or more upon request) for local school groups, neigborhood residents, and visitors from around the world.

Docents learn leadership and public speaking skills from the best, take pride in their own history, and have a lot of fun! This is your chance to meet the brilliant, committed, friendly volunteers you've always wanted to know, and to help a fantastic organization share its inspiring message.
