In Italo Calvino's novel, Invisible Cities, the emperor Kublai Khan listens to Marco Polo's travels throughout the vast Mongol Empire. In the end, Khan concludes that all cities are ultimately the same- human desires, dreams, fears, and memories have more in common than not. A modern-day version of Marco Polo's travel stories, Bear’s “postcards” are part of an ongoing body of work where human commonalities are revealed, and dissimilarities fade.
