Be presents... Munk (DJ set), Ark People (Live) June 13, 2009

Since Proud Galleries re-launched in 2008, Be has been their flagship club-night attracting up to fifteen hundred revellers every Saturday. Now in its second year the club has redefined London's club scene with its unique mix of indie, disco electro and rock n' roll, spectacular live acts, performance art and burlesque.

Playing live tonight are six piece Ark People who return for their second turn on the Proud stage, and a special surprise act, a band of multi national avant-pop misfits so good their identity must be kept a secret. Meanwhile on the decks resident DJs’ David H and John Power will be joined by Munk, founder of Gomma the essential German disco-punk label and European answer to DFA.

In the South Gallery The Non-Stop Electric Cabaret will continue to amuse and amaze in equal measure. Curated by London's celebrated sassy Burlesque artist Miss Vicky Butterfly and accompanied by a vintage rock n roll jukebox from Stables Market stall holder, Bioux, expect a parade of the most weird and the wonderful burlesque acts London has to offer.

About: Munk
Otherwise known as MATHIAS MODICA, Munk is one of the two owners of the GOMMA LABEL from Germany. Mathias is half German and half Italian. He releases music under the name of Munk, travels around the world as a DJ and with his MUNK band, runs the Gomma label with his friend Jonas Imbery, does T shirt designs, produces music for independent fashion shows, does soundinstallations and organizes exhibitions (the MondoGomma shows that have been taken place in Tokio, Stockholm, Berlin a.o. cities).

Billed as “the German DFA” by NME, Gomma is responsible for releasing some choice tracks from the likes of Headman and whomadewho, as well as from the Munk himself – Mathias has just dropped his second album Cloudbuster, where takes his instantly recognisable fusion of house, twisted disco and Krautrock to the next level.

Split between London and Leeds, Ark People are a a six-piece comprising of vocals/double bass/keys, two guitars/backing vocals, keys/backing vocals, bass and drums. The brainchild of artful and skilled twins, Miles and Marcus Haughton, Ark People produce a grandiose version of the dark pop that White Lies are currently riding the wave of, has seen them compared to the likes of Arcade Fire and tipped for big things this year. You’ll be able to catch them at any number of festivals this year, but then you would probably end up getting your high heels all dirty, much better to enjoy them in all the warmth and comfort of Proud.
