Description:

A sledge hammer to crack a nut – or a transformational infrastructure – the Atkins’ SDI.

As geospatial professionals, we have all struggled to convince the sceptics of the importance of spatial information – and the technologies which enable this. This paper is a candid presentation of our experiences in Atkins – and how progress is being made as we work to converge the technologies of CAD, BIM and GIS.

Dr Anne Kemp is a Director at Atkins Limited, and is Atkins’ Network Chair for Geospatial and Integrated Digital Solutions. She has 25 years experience of GIS and environmental modelling. Her career commenced with post doctoral research at Bristol University. She has since held positions at BARNUS (a Brown and Root affiliated environmental consultancy), and RSK Environment Limited, where she was a Director for five years, managing large GIS projects for Shell UK, and OPA, and EIA projects for MOD and Statoil. Anne has been at Atkins for 12 years, where she first introduced GIS to the business, and has acted as advisor to a wide range of projects, ranging from contaminated land to large data management projects. During the last five years, the size of the Geospatial business has increased under Anne’s direction to be one of the largest independent consultancies in the UK, with key contracts won with Metronet, the Joint Research Council, Olympics Delivery Authority, The Environment Agency and The European Environment Agency. Over the past 3 years, a number of key contracts have been undertaken in the Middle East, including the UAE Holistic Master Plan, Dubai Waste Minimisation Project, and Kuwait Sanitary Master Plan – all of which employ GIS-enabled information management and analysis.
