Host: American Enterprise Institute. In Baghdad at Sunrise: A Brigade Commander’s War in Iraq, newly retired U.S. Army colonel Peter R. Mansoor details his experience commanding troops in the wake of the fall of Baghdad at the dawn of the insurgency in Iraq. Colonel Mansoor, who served as a principal aide to General David Petraeus, offers a critical analysis of the successes and failures of the U.S. Army’s counterinsurgency operations in Iraq. More than a combat memoir, the book describes the challenges of organizing, commanding, and protecting a brigade—along with the difficulties of working with a civilian population itself under duress. At this event, Colonel Mansoor will reflect on his experiences and examine the larger operational and strategic issues surrounding the Iraq war. AEI resident scholar Frederick W. Kagan will respond.
