Contemporary Indian politics has wrenched itself out of post-Independence rhetoric and sentimentality. Politicians have practically given up claim to ideology or even idealism. The subversion of representation by manipulating numbers to get a majority for power through money and other unholy inducements is now treated as a game of skill, even something to be admired. It is interesting to place idealism, with a bit of nostalgia for old Socialism, in the mire of contemporary politics and see conflict and resolution in emerging narratives.
