HELLO ALL!!!
It is meeting time again for the Fort Worth Web Design Meetup Group (FWWDMG). Seats are limited, so please RSVP ASAP on the meetup.com website so that you are guaranteed a seat!
PRESENTATION TOPIC:
SECURITY AND COMPLIANCE FOR E-COMMERCE WEB SITES
Many merchants may ask, "Why should I care about the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) compliance rules?" I would answer them with, "so you do not become another TJMax/ Marshalls". In March of 2007, hackers stole at least 45 million credit and debit cards from the company's computing infrastructure. TJMax/Marshalls face at least a dozen class action lawsuits in North America and this has been stated as the largest information security breach in United States History. (PCI Compliance Guide, 2007)
The Payment Card Industry Security Standard addresses the confidentiality, integrity and availability of consumer credit card data. This standard mandates information security programs in Fortune 500 companies as well as small mom and pop operations. There is no silver bullet to this problem and it needs to be addressed holistically to ensure the protection of consumer credit card data. If merchants do not comply with PCI DSS, they could be fined, restrictions be imposed on the merchant for card acceptance or the merchant could be completely banned from accepting credit cards. Merchants that are PCI DSS compliant at the time of a security breach receive a "safe harbor" or "a get out of jail free card" from restrictions. (Master Card Service Provider, 2007)
