Dark in August: Rare Vampire Films
Thu, Aug 26 – Sun, Aug 29
The appeal of the vampire myth never dies. Get out of the deadly August sunlight, and creep down to YBCA for this weekend series of rarely-screened films.

Near Dark
By Kathryn Bigelow
Long before The Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow burst onto the scene with this wicked spin on the vampire genre. Both grisly and poetic, Near Dark somehow blends vampire legends, westerns and biker movies into one big ass-kicking hillbilly nightmare. (1987, 94 min, 35mm)

Vampire Hookers
By Cirio H. Santiago
Shot for about ten pesos in the Philippines, this oft-retitled mess stars John Carradine as a vampire pimp in a white linen suit and Panama hat. Not only the vampires in the movies suck, but the movie itself sucks. We recommend you do not attend. Um, just kidding. Vampire Hookers is highly entertaining, featuring a long orgy scene, endless toilet humor, and sexy girl vampires with tan lines. (1978, 88 min, 35mm)

Sat, Aug 28, 7:30 pm & Sun, Aug 29, 4:30 pm
Vampyr
By Carl Theodore Dreyer
Unquestionably one of the greatest vampire films, Vampyr is the tale of a student of the occult who is confronted by the presence of a mysterious evil in a village outside of Paris. A totally uncompromising filmmaker, Dreyer creates an overwhelming atmosphere of dread, with austere, deliberately obscured imagery and an unsettling, unstable narrative. (1932, 73 min, 35mm)

YBCA upgrades its 35mm projectors in August!
Despite the trend toward digital projection, YBCA has reaffirmed its commitment to the special beauty of 35mm motion picture film by upgrading its projection system. In August, YBCA is installing Century projectors, replacing its obsolete, crusty, and over 50-year-old Cinemeccanica machines. YBCA is also installing a new screen, which will provide an even brighter image and heighten the viewing experience. Ever mindful of new technologies, YBCA is also actively fundraising to acquire an HD video projector to showcase new films in their finest light.
