A forceful tragedy that etches itself in one's memory with its striking location (a desolate desert valley near the Arab-settled village of Um El-Fahem), its powerful, classical narrative, vivid performances from a non-professional cast and cinematic widescreen compositions. The debut feature from young Palestinian director Tawfik Abu Wael centres on a family dominated by the tyrannical, driven Abu Shukri, who has locked his wife, son and daughters into a desperate situation whereby their only means of survival is the ceaseless production of charcoal. However, hints of personal freedom lead to ominous faults forming in Shukri's tightly-controlled family unit, despite the lengths to which he's prepared to go to keep it together.
