About the Shakespeare Contact Lab Group. We are a group of actors, dancers and musicians exploring the physical theater possibilities of Shakespeare through the lens of the dance form, Contact Improvisation. Contact Improv pioneer and award winning choreographer, John LeFan, is artistic director. Production designer K.T. Graham of Michael Smuins Ballet leads the design team. Local jazz and world fusion musician, Allan Philips, just returned from Istanbul with a bunch of new toys to lead the music. We recently performed a staged reading of The Tempest, produced by Subterranean Shakespeare. A fully staged, dance/theater production of The Tempest premieres in September.

About The Mariposa Studio. The Mariposa Studio, founded in 1975, was the first true home and breeding ground of Contact Improvisation on the west coast. Mangrove Dance Collective and The Blake Street Hawkeyes Theater Company developed some of the bay areas earliest work in what is now called physical theater. Some of the people who first worked in the bay area at The Mariposa Studio include actors Bob Ernst and Whoopi Goldberg, dancers John LeFan and Sara Shelton Mann.
