Artie Shaw is widely considered to be one of the greatest jazz clarinetists of his time. His career as a musician, composer and band leader blossomed during the swing era of the 1930s and 1940s as he formed musical groups with such talents as vocalists Billie Holiday, Helen Forrest, and Mel Torme, drummers Buddy Rich and Dave Tough, guitarists Barney Kessel, Jimmy Raney, and Tal Farlow and trombonist-arranger Ray Conniff, among many others.

Artie Shaw heard a recording of Dick Johnson's music in 1980 and wrote a note to Dick's personal manager saying, "Dick's clarinet playing as of this time, is the best I've ever heard, bar nobody, and you can quote me on that, anywhere, anytime!" In 1983, Shaw asked Johnson to front his orchestra.

Dick Johnson's big band experience had started with Charlie Spivak, followed by Buddy Morrow, Neil Hefti, Benny Goodman, and Buddy Rich. He idolized Artie Shaw, the clarinet titan, and continues to perform Shaw's Concerto for Clarinet at every performance.

Currently, the band's unique formula appeals to a wide range of audiences, Begin the Beguine fans and jazz fans alike. Artie Shaw always encouraged new music, so the band continues to add tasteful new musical arrangements regularly.
