Anzanga plays traditional and contemporary marimba music from Zimbabwe, Mozambique, South Africa and Gambia, plus original compositions created and arranged in an African style by their director, Sheree Seretse. They are based in Seattle, Washington and have been performing in the Northwest since 1987. They have toured extensively throughout the United States and Canada but this is their first trip to the midwest and to Madison, Wisconsin. The ensemble plays using eight marimbas – three sopranos, three tenors, a baritone, and a bass. There are also two hoshos players (gourd shakers). The marimbas are hand-crafted xylophones made from various hardwoods. Each key sits above a resonator with a vibrating membrane to amplify the sound and add a unique “buzz” to the music. Anzanga feels privileged to be one of only a handful of groups in North America to play this joyful, vibrant music. It is Anzanga’s goal to entertain, enlighten and inspire all who hear them!
