This exhibition is the first American survey of Anselm Kiefer's work in more than 15 years. Widely regarded as one of the most pertinent artists working today, Kiefer engages the sensitive issue of what it means to be German in contemporary times and addresses the role German history has played in the larger contexts of world history and religion. The exhibition showcases works spanning from 1969 to 2005, many of which have never been seen in the United States. Kiefer's often enormous, richly developed pieces intertwine a complex range of subjects, including reference to alchemical treatises; Nordic, Greek, Egyptian, and early Christian mythology; and the mystical Jewish cabala. One of the central themes emphasized in this exhibition is Kiefer's career-long meditation on the relationship between heaven and earth.
