'Lost in Translation: the art and science of using evidence in practice' will explore the importance of using evidence that underpins practice and develop new insights into how this affects health care policy and practice.

Using the best available evidence in practice is something we strive towards, but is not always easy to achieve. The lecture will explore theoretical perspectives that underpin the use of evidence and discuss why they are relevant to health care policy and practice. This will lead onto critically examining how different types of evidence have been used in policy and practice and explore the role of both "magical thinking" and uncertainty when using evidence.

Implementing evidence into practice is a form of translation, and the lecture will consider factors which promote the integrity and coherence of the translation, explore what sort of changes in the translation might be needed and consider what can turn the translation into a very different story from the one intended.
