Seismographs are used to study earthquakes, volcanoes, and unusual seismic sources, like ocean storms and icequakes. Rick C. Aster, Professor of Geophysics and Department Chair, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, and his colleagues are examining 35 years of seismic data in order to determine the influence severe ocean storm waves have on the great ice sheets and icebergs of Antarctica. This seismic research illuminates previously unsuspected links between climate, oceanography, seismology, and glaciology.
