WHO: Jenny Montague, the New England Aquarium’s Assistant Curator of Marine Mammals, will recount the lively history of the harbor seals, California sea lions, dolphins, sea otters, fur seals and other marine mammals that have made their home on Central Wharf over the years. An experienced professional animal trainer for more than 25 years, Montague will discuss how presentation styles have changed to adapt to an audience that is more environmentally aware.

WHAT: Training techniques have become more sophisticated as trainers developed a better understanding of behavioral science and networked with other facilities and trainers. Through training, the animals are relaxed and cooperative for veterinary diagnostics such as blood sampling and ultra sound. These behaviors are done on exhibit with our visitors able to watch. Additional changes to our presentations include the various venues including our always accessible harbor seal exhibit, the Discovery, and currently, our New Balance Foundation Marine Mammal Center overlooking Boston Harbor.

Included in the history will be stories about Andre, who was given to the Aquarium in the 1960s by his owners in Maine, and Hoover, the Aquarium’s legendary talking harbor seal who could say: “hello there,” “how are ya,” “get outta here,” “get down,” and “Hoover” in a heavy Boston accent. Hoover died in 1985 but left several offspring, some of whom still live in the Aquarium’s Harbor Seals Exhibit.

WHEN: Tuesday, Oct. 13; 7 p.m. The lecture is free, open to the public, and supported by the Lowell Institute.

WHERE: New England Aquarium’s Harborside Learning Lab, Boston
