Yalçın Gökçebağ is widely considered one of the most notable artists in Turkey. In a career spanning more than four decades, Gökçebağ has used his naïve style masterfully to portray images of Anatolian rural life.
This exhibition follows different stages of Gökçebağ’s career to present a comprehensive view of the artist. His earlier paintings from the 1970s offer a more two-dimensional view of Anatolian villages. His use of light creates abstract figures and spaces are enclosed with walls or fences to portray the limited world of the villagers. However, Gökçebağ’s later paintings incorporate more depth through the organization of the scenes, the use of light and the choice of colors. Shadows can stand for markers of time within these paintings presented through a diagonal view and these changes in Gökçebağ’s technique communicate greater dynamism. Finally, his latest works utilize colors in different ways to create an optical effect that generates further depth. Overall, the exhibition is a fascinating study on Yalçın Gökçebağ, whose craftsmanship demonstrates how he is a meticulous artist that invests a lot of thought and energy in the formulation of his paintings to great effect.
