Thick Description, Potrero Hill's professional theater, begins its 2007 performances with the premiere of a new one-act opera by David Conte and Oliver Mayer, AMERICA TROPICAL. AMERICA TROPICAL, David Conte's opera about generations of unrest and redemption in three centuries of Los Angeles - from its founding in 1781 through the Rodney King riots and on to today - features a libretto by noted playwright Oliver Mayer and a cast of extraordinary singers and musicians. Who's in it? Performers: Sibel Demirmen, Antoine Garth, Mark Hernandez, Adam Paul Lau, Sepideh Moafi, Eleazar Rodríguez, Chad Runyon, and Justin Niehoff Smith. John Kendall Bailey conducting Justin Mackewich, violin; Hannah Addario-Berry, cello; Ian Dickenson, bass; Abby McKee, flute; Jonathan Russell, clarinet; Alex Lu and Keisuke Nakagoshi, piano. Directed by Thick Description's Tony Kelly, with set and lighting design by Thick Description's Rick Martin, costume design by Greco.
