October's Thursday Afternoon Film Series highlights master detectives skilled in the fine art of criminal detection. The movies are shown in the Williamsburg Library Theatre, 515 Scotland Street. Thursday, October 4 - Another Thin Man (1939)
Nick and Nora Charles (William Powell, Myrna Loy) investigate the mysterious murder of a Long Island industrialist in this third film of the Thin Man series. Asta the dog and new baby, Nick Jr., provide comic relief but, as usual, it's the witty banter and sly asides between the two leads that make these films so delightful.

Thursday, October 11 - Double Feature
Charlie Chan at the Olympics (1937)
Charlie Chan (Warner Oland) races from Honolulu to Berlin on the trail of ruthless spies who have stolen a top-secret military device. Number One Son, Lee Chan (Keye Luke), a participant in the Olympic Games, lends able assistance to his sleuthing father.
AND
Think Fast, Mr. Moto (1937)
Mr. Moto uncovers a drug smuggling ring with ties to Shanghai and San Francisco in this first film of the series. Peter Lorre is very good playing the mysterious Mr. Moto who is a master of disguise and an expert at martial arts.

Tuesday, October 16 - Sherlock Holmes - The Scarlet Claw (1944)
NOTE THE SPECIAL TUESDAY SCREENING
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson investigate a series of savage murders in a small village in Canada. The locals believe that a supernatural creature is on the loose but Holmes is skeptical and suspects that a vengeful criminal is behind the carnage. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce play the Master Detective and his bumbling partner.

October 25 - Double Feature
The Kennel Murder Case (1933)
Debonair detective Philo Vance (William Powell) looks into the bizarre death of a much reviled millionaire dog fancier in this intriguing mystery. The film costars Mary Astor and Eugene Pallette and is directed by Michael Curtiz.
AND
Bulldog Drummond Escapes (1937)
This fun mystery has Captain "Bulldog" Drummond trying to rescue a woman being held captive in a fog-shrouded English manor house by a villainous group of counterfeiters. Ray Milland and Heather Angel star with E. E. Clive as Drummond's unflappable butler Tenny.
