TOPIC: Abbeyfield Houses: A Different Kind of Seniors Home

DESCRIPTION: Abbeyfield Houses are small-scale, family-style retirement homes. Started in Great Britain in 1955 by a former British Army officer, there are now 20 homes in B.C. All houses are run by non-profit societies and are managed by volunteers. This presentation will explain how these retirement homes offer a friendly environment and companionship for adults.

Started in Great Britain in 1955 by a former British Army officer, Richard Carr-Gomm, there are now over 800 Abbeyfeld Houses in Great Britain, 27 in Canada, of which 20 are in B.C., several in Australia and New Zealand, a few in some European countries, and one in South Africa. All houses are run by non-profit societies and are managed by volunteers.

SPEAKERS: Judy Davis and Agnes Crozier.

Judy Davis served on the Board of Directors of Vancouver Abbeyfield from 1992 to 2007, and continues to be an active volunteer. She worked for the University of British Columbia for most of her working life.

Agnes Crozier is a current Director, having started at Vancouver Abbeyfield in 1998. She is a retired nurse with overseas experience, and has been involved with Marpole Place for several years in different capacities.
