Description
"When you're at home with yourself, that's when the war is over."
Walls depicts the stories of soldiers in of the Vietnam Era and their loved ones preceding the unveiling of Maya Lin's Vietnam War Memorial. It is a timeless play that explores our society's conflicted relationship with war and finding ways to honor the dead. Walls echoes loudly today in its balanced and seamless portrayal of the human relationships of war's sacrifice.

The wall that serves as the focal point of the Vietnam War Memorial is a metaphor throughout the play about the walls that obstruct our lives. In trying to build this wall as a memorial for brave soldiers who perished in Vietnam, Maya Lin, the 22 year-old architect exposed the numerous "walls" in our society regarding Vietnam.

We will also be conducting a project in conjunction with the Production called MyWalls where audience members will be able to write themselves a letter concerning their own 'walls' on war, society, etc. that will be mailed back to them after the Iraq war is over.

This is Asian American Theater Company's 15th Anniversary Production of Jeannie Barroga's Walls. This production has been awarded an NEA Grant for educational outreach which will include a touring component as well as an interactive on-line blog component.
