They met in 1947 and she served as his secretary for a short time. Their friendship lasted three decades. This private collection of notes and letters has never before been publicly displayed and is a fascinating private look at one of Copland’s friendships. The exhibit is made possible through the library, the Elgin Symphony Orchestra and Randal Swiggum, who studied the letters and interviewed Claire in her Rockefeller apartment in Manhattan. The exhibit will run from March 1—May 15, 2007, in conjunction with the Elgin Symphony Orchestra’s festival, Aaron Copland: American Icon.
