On Thursday, January 22, 2009 at 8:00 PM, distinguished jazz pianist Marian McPartland will be joined by the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra as she performs A Portrait of Rachel Carson, a composition she wrote as a tribute to Carson’s pioneering work in environmentalism, particularly her 1962 book Silent Spring, which revealed the dangers of DDT.

Working with pianist and arranger Allen Broadbent, the composition grew from a solo piano piece to one with full orchestration. McPartland hosts Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz, which has been broadcast on National Public Radio since 1978.
The concert is free and open to the public, but with limited seating. Conducted by Richard Auldon Clark.
This concert is presented as part of the Trinity Institute’s 39th National Theological Conference, Radical Abundance: A Theology of Sustainability, taking place from January 21-24, 2009. This year’s conference will explore the theological basis for reimagining abundance measured not by consumer satisfaction but by just and sustainable relations with nature and communities. Keynote speakers will include MacArthur “Genius” Fellow/Sundance Channel host Majora Carter, environmental theologian Timothy Gorringe, best-selling author David C. Korten, and Latin American theologian, Néstor O. Miguez,
