Tigard Public Library celebrates Teen Read Week on Thursday, October 14, from 5-7 p.m. with, "A Hepkitten's Guide to the War: Teens, Taxi Dancing and WWII," a presentation by Portland young adult author Christine Fletcher. After her remarks, teens can learn the popular '40s-era dances from a local dance instructor.

Fletcher is the author of the award-winning young adult novel Ten Cents a Dance. Teens in grades 6-12 will learn what happens when 16-year-old Ruby, in an effort to lift her family out of poverty, falls into the seedy, yet deceptively fun world of taxi dancing. To truly get in the mood of the era, participants can then learn popular dances from the period like swing and jitterbug. Attendees may also enter a drawing for an iPod Shuffle.

Every October during Teen Read Week, the Tigard Library joins libraries across the country to celebrate the great books that keep teens reading. Visit the library or the Reading for Fun web page for fabulous teen literature recommendations: www.tigard-or.gov/library/teens/reading_for_fun/default.asp

The program will be held in the Library's Community Room. Library programs are always free.
